Made me lose most of my friends, and lowered my crying threshold to the ground. Luckily, I can always just play Amumu and relish in the poetic irony. However it does get boring looking at the same old green bandage boy – and I think it’s time for an upgrade. So today we’re looking at all of Amumu’s skins and ranking them based on what they offer, and the amount of kidneys you’ll have to sell to get them.
12. Vancouver Amumu
Released: February 12th, 2010 Price: 520 RP This skin just feels like the predecessor to Chroma skins. It doesn’t really do anything besides adding some color to our lonely mummy. I can’t really say that it’s bad, as it does have an Olympic theme and it’s a valuable collectible. But the other skins just offer so much more. If some of his abilities mirrored the Olympic theme, then maybe I would have put it a bit higher up. But for now it’s at the bottom of my list.
11. Almost-Prom King Amumu
Released: February 7th, 2011 Price: 520 RP I like where they were going with this skin, especially the concept of a heartbroken Amumu getting robbed of the Prom King title. But it didn’t go that far visually. Although the splash art is masterfully done and tells the entire story, the in-game model doesn’t really get the theme across. They just took the base model for Amumu and added a toupee and a suit. It definitely looks quite dapper, and at only 520 RP it’s an absolutely valid choice. But probably not the one that I would go for.
10. Hextech Amumu
Released: September 26th, 2019 Price: 10 Gemstones If you’ve read any of my articles before, you would know that I’m especially critical of Hextech skins because of their ridiculous price. However, I actually quite like Hextech Amumu. I think the in-game model was expertly done here, obviously drawing inspiration from Wall.E, and the animations are all well-polished and thematically coherent. I especially like his backing animation, which honestly seems to be a theme with all the higher tier Amumu skins. So why am I placing it this low? There are three main reasons: First, that the voice over was not re-done and made to fit the aesthetic. That then ties into my second reason, which is that the robotic theme has already been done by a different skin, not to mention that one’s cheaper and features a more appropriate voice-over. And lastly, a man can only sell so many kidneys.
9. Re-Gifted Amumu
Released: December 14th, 2010 Price: 520 RP This skin has a very simple idea – and I think it does it justice. Amumu is a gift from the Riot gods, and now his in-game model reflects that status. However, as one would expect from a 520 RP skin, it’s pretty limited and only changes the in-game model. I don’t really mind that. However, there is a pricier skin that has a similar aesthetic while also featuring extremely well-made and polished animations – so I’m afraid I’ll have to sell out here.
8. Little Knight Amumu
Released: July 18th, 2011 Price: 750 RP I’m kind of confused as to why this skin is priced the way it is, considering that Amumu has a handful of base character model changing skins, and yet this is the only one that isn’t 520 RP. The skin itself is pretty good. But nothing you’ll be writing home about. Having Amumu be a knight is a bit random thematically, but the armor design is very clean and cool here, so I’ll let it slide. The splash art is also rather excellent, as it truly looks like it came out of a fable. Maybe the better splash art added those mysterious 230 RP? Who knows!
7. Pharaoh Amumu
Released: February 2nd, 2010 Price: 520 RP This skin was just an obvious choice for Amumu, being that he’s a mummy and all. It does only change the base skin, but all the animations already fit the pharaoh theme. So I can’t dock points for that. The skin goes especially well with his ult, as it truly feels like an old Egyptian curse has just been set upon the land! I do wish that the yellows were a bit more prominent on the in-game model, like it’s shown in the splash art – but it’s only a minor nit-pick.
6. Pumpkin Prince Amumu
Released: October 22nd, 2020 Price: 1350 RP The following five skins are all just delightful, and do swap around in my head every so often. But for now, I’ll put Pumpkin Prince Amumu at the bottom of my “best of” list, because of a minor nit-pick. The skin does a wonderful job of making Amumu both adorable and spooky, with excellent design choices across the board. His backing animation will always amuse me and the ult animation for this skin is my favorite out of all of them. The only complaint that I have is in regards to his Q animation. It looks fine, but having the Q be chains and not something like pumpkin root seems slightly off-putting. Especially since we’ve seen that chain animation before.
5. Emumu
Released: August 1st, 2010 Price: 520 RP Maybe it’s due to nostalgia or my obsessive love for puns, but I absolutely fell in love with this skin. Even though the skin itself is arguably stupid! But having Amumu be an emo kid just made so much sense to me, not to mention the name pun. I had to put this in my top tier list. Plus he looks like he was ripped straight out of a South Park episode, which is great in my eyes. Although it can’t compete with the more expensive fancy skins that are to follow, Emumu will always remain special to me.
4. Surprise Party Amumu
Released: March 31st, 2015 Price: 1350 RP This is what Re-Gifted Amumu should have been. Although I don’t know which party Amumu could canonically go to, he’s definitely ready to party! The in-game model is really sweet, pun intended, and all of the animations have that iconic Surprise Party thematic. I especially like his Q, as I feel like it’s the ability that a lot of other Amumu skins skimp out on. They also added a really neat aspect to his ult here: it’ll draw out a happy face when you hit an enemy, and a sad face when you completely miss. I always like it when abilities showcase how I feel internally.
3. Porcelain Amumu
Released: January 26th, 2022 Price: 1350 RP This skin is all over the place. It’s a gimmick skin that absolutely nails some aspects of Amumu while somewhat failing at others. Let’s start with the pros: The character model is top tier. Not only is Amumu’s model very clean and unique, but they even gave him a little mouse friend. Said mouse even pops up during your backing animation – which is adorable. This skin also has an incredibly creative take on the W animation, as it looks and sounds like a boiling kettle. Lastly, some of the chromas (like the Obsidian or Golden Tiger), add a lot of variety to the skin. Now to the cons. The Q, E, and R feel somewhat random. They’re not bad per se, just a bit odd. The chain you throw out doesn’t seem to fit the theme that much and your ult has you transform into a god for a split second. Visually, all of these abilities are excellent – but they seemed to out of place for me personally.
2. Sad Robot Amumu
Released: May 28th, 2012 Price: 1350 RP Sad Robot Amumu is just well designed and well executed. I honestly don’t have anything bad to say about it. The voice-over was given the classic robot treatment, and all the ability animations were done in a way that makes sense. His Q is made out of cables, his W has him spill some oil, his E has an electricity effect, and his ult has literal emojis at the borders depicting a sad face. All in all a very good skin that any Amumu main should consider grabbing.
1. Infernal Amumu
Released: October 16th, 2018 Price: 1350 RP This is it, the best Amumu skin (debatably). Who knew that the best way to display a crying bandage boy was to make him a sad fiery Satan spawn? Although this design choice seems random, everything works really well. The recall animation is a national treasure that needs to be protected. And all of the abilities were given a fiery theme without going too overboard. Having his Q consist of chains made a bit more sense this time around, and his W and ult are just clean as hell.
